Marlow walks

There’s something about spring in Marlow that makes staying indoors feel like a waste. The days stretch a little longer, the Thames sparkles back into life and the surrounding countryside turns that fresh, hopeful shade of green. It’s the season for trainers by the door, sunglasses at the ready and a post‑walk coffee (or pint) firmly on the agenda.

Whether you’re after a gentle wander, something family‑friendly or a longer loop that feels properly rewarding, Marlow has no shortage of beautiful routes, many conveniently finishing near somewhere excellent to refuel. Below are some of the prettiest and most enjoyable walks to try this spring and summer.

Higginson Park

If relaxed riverside strolling is your thing, Higginson Park ticks all the boxes. Sitting right along the Thames, this much‑loved park comes into its own in spring, with blossoming trees, wide open lawns and that unmistakable holiday‑at‑home feeling. The flat, well‑kept paths make it ideal for all ages, perfect with children, a buggy, or simply when you want a gentle walk without committing to muddy boots. Take your time, pause on one of the many benches, watch boats glide past and enjoy the postcard views back towards Marlow Bridge. And let’s be honest, the cafés seal the deal. With M Café at Court Garden and The Little Green Boat Café both on hand, this is a walk that naturally turns into a coffee stop (or two).

Thames Path (Cookham – Marlow)

For a walk that feels effortlessly scenic, the Thames Path from Cookham to Marlow is hard to beat. This classic riverside route stretches for around 5 miles one way and is widely considered one of the prettiest sections of the Thames. Starting in the ever‑charming village of Cookham, the path follows the gentle curve of the river past open meadows and peaceful countryside, including the beautiful expanse of Cock Marsh. It’s largely flat, wonderfully calming and easy to enjoy at a relaxed pace, ideal for a slow weekend wander. As you approach Marlow, you’ll pass the lock and arrive by the iconic suspension bridge, a satisfying end point before heading into town. Reward yourself with a coffee at Fego, or grab a table outside one of Marlow’s popular pubs, such as The Chequers, and soak up that “we earned this” feeling.

The Marlow Circular Walk

If you’re in the mood for something more immersive, the Marlow Circular Walk delivers variety in spades. This is the route that shows off just how much Marlow has to offer in one satisfying loop. Beginning in Marlow town centre, the walk follows the Thames past Higginson Park, Bisham Abbey and Temple Lock, before heading inland through open fields and into the wooded stretches of the Chilterns. It’s a lovely balance of riverside views, countryside calm and gentle gradients, with scenery that keeps changing just when you think you’ve seen it all. Allow around 1 to 3 hours and take it at a comfortable pace. This is a walk for those who enjoy feeling properly “out for the day”, without ever straying too far from civilisation. Why not fuel up properly beforehand with a leisurely breakfast at one of Marlow’s well‑loved cafés, such as Strawberry Grove or The Mixing Jug, perfect for great coffee and an easy, relaxed start to the day.

Marlow Common walk

For a wilder, woodland escape, Marlow Common is an absolute must. Just moments from town, this walk feels like stepping into another world, peaceful, atmospheric and wonderfully seasonal. The route takes you through ancient beech woods and the Chiltern Society’s nature reserve, where spring brings dozens of bluebells and early summer quietly reveals orchids along the paths. Look up and you’ll often spot red kites circling overhead; look more carefully and you might glimpse deer moving between the trees. This is a moderate walk, with a few short ascents and descents, but nothing too demanding. It’s ideal when you want nature, space and a breath of fresh air, without committing to a full‑day hike.

Bisham Woods circular walk

The Bisham Woods Circular is a popular loop for good reason. This gentle route winds its way through ancient woodland, with leafy paths, soft inclines and just enough variety to keep things interesting. In spring, bluebells put on a particularly good show, making this a calm, restorative walk from start to finish. At around 3–3.5 miles, this circular walk can be comfortably completed in 1 to 2 hours, depending on how often you stop (and you will want to stop). Once you’ve finished your woodland wander, it’s well worth heading back over to Marlow High Street to enjoy a well‑earned lunch. Swap muddy paths for café tables and make a proper day of it, fresh air followed by good food, is always a winning combination. This walk is perfect for a Sunday, finishing up with a leisurely Sunday lunch at The Coach, the ideal reward after a stroll through the woods.
